Go caving and investigate the underworld of the lime mountains. The entrance to the longest navigable cave yet found in Europe is located very close to the MOTION base. At around 1,680 metres, this is also Europe’s deepest cave.
It is possible to navigate beneath the massive limestone of the Loferer Steinberge for over 40 km. You will be enthralled as you are transported back over millions of years, to a time when our land was covered by glaciers and the water worked to create an impressive "world of shapes" below ground. But there’s no need to panic: to start off with, we will only investigate the initial part of the cave system. Step by step, we will work our way forward in the light of a carbide lamp. Your cave guide, who knows the countless passages of this cave labyrinth like the back of this hand, will ensure your safety and orientation.
You will be impressed by the quietness as we remove ourselves further and further from the world outside. The quiet is only broken by the even breathing of your comrades and the scraping of shoes on the rock. Sometimes you can clearly hear the roar and dripping of underground streams. Participants will wonder through the caves for around 2 – 3 hours. You must be sure-footed, because instead of normal bridges and paths, we have to rely on footholds or ladders in the steep passages, with only the fixed rope to hold onto. Of course, it gets quite tight sometimes, but your cave guide always knows the way forward, and sometime the ….
Participation conditions
Good general state of health and fitness. Sure-footed on uneven terrain. Not susceptible to claustrophobia. Recommended equipment: good, non-slip climbing or hiking shoes, warm clothing (the temperature will be between approx. 1 – 5 °C). Possibly a change of trousers and socks for afterwards. Services: guided tour of the Lamprechtsofenhöhle, provision of miner’s lamp and helmet; boots provided as necessary.
