The brain is a hungry organ - and a picky one at that

Michaela Altenberger,

While we are thinking about the perfect skincare routine, we often forget the most important anti-ageing program: the one for our brain. Not only are the grey cells hungry for energy - they consume around 20 percent of our daily calorie intake - but they are also extremely demanding when it comes to the quality of their food.the brain is a hungry organ - and picky too.

The idea that we can simply throw any nutrients at our brain and it will work is about as naive as believing that a Ferrari will run optimally even with the cheapest fuel. Our neuronal network needs specific micronutrients to perform at its best - from concentration in the morning to regeneration at night.

What many people don't know: Most cognitive impairments that we attribute to old age are actually the result of gradual nutrient deficiencies. Forgetfulness, poor concentration and mental fatigue are often the first warning signs of an undersupplied brain. The good news? This development is not irreversible.

The crucial question is not whether we are taking in enough nutrients, but whether we are getting the right ones in the optimum combination. This is because vitamins and minerals do not work as lone warriors in the brain, but as highly precisely coordinated teams. Only when these alliances work can the full cognitive power unfold.

Time to give the most important organ in the body the attention it deserves.
